Story of babar is a tale invented orally by Cécile de Brunhoff, and then written in book by his husband Jean in 1931. Francis Poulenc composed a piece for piano inspired by the tale in july 1940.
I made this electronic interpretation of Story of Babar in 2009 and chose to not mention the text in the piece, just tried to create a very narrative feeling only with sounds.
Then a few years later, in 2011, Jean-Emmanuel Charles composed Babar’s Trip, the afterpart for piano, drums, guitar, clarinet, trumpet, horn and cello. I make a selection of 9 pieces and colored them in electronic monochrome, analog absurdities and synthetic jokes.

L’histoire de Babar est née de l’imagination de Cécile de Brunhoff, qui, en s’inspirant de contes africains, racontait des histoires improvisées à ses deux enfants. Jean, son mari, séduit par cette histoire d’un éléphant qui s’enfuit pour échapper au chasseur et arrive dans une ville où il s’habille comme un homme, en écrit une version illustrée, éditée en 1931 et connue comme la version originale de Babar. En juillet 1940, Francis Poulenc en compose une version pour piano.
Mon interprétation de cette pièce a été réalisée en 2009. J’ai choisi de ne pas faire figurer le texte original dans l’enregistrement mais plutôt de porter la narration uniquement sur des choix sonores, de textures et d’enchainements de ces pièces courtes.
Quelques années plus tard, Jean-Emmanuel Charles compose le voyage de babar, pièce musicale en tableaux pour piano, batterie, guitare, clarinette, trompette, cor et violoncelle. J’en ai extrait 9 morceaux et les ai colorés de camaïeux électroniques, d’absurdités analogiques et autres billevesées synthétiques.
